Check-Up and Clean

Protect your smile, comfort, and long-term oral health with a thorough dental check-up and professional clean designed to prevent problems early.

What is a general dental check-up and clean?

A teeth check-up and dental cleaning is a preventive appointment designed to protect your teeth, gums, and overall oral health.

During your routine dental exam, we carefully assess your teeth, gums, soft tissues, and existing dental work to identify early signs of decay, gum disease, cracks, wear, or other concerns. Digital scans or X-rays may be recommended when clinically necessary to help us see what’s happening beneath the surface.

A professional teeth cleaning service is more effective than what you can do yourself at home. As part of the scale and clean, your dentist removes plaque and hardened buildup — known as calculus — that cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone. This reduces your risk of cavities, gum inflammation, and bad breath, while leaving your teeth feeling smooth and refreshed.

At Melbourne Dental Studio, we use advanced technology and a gentle approach to make your appointment efficient, thorough, and comfortable — whether you’re maintaining a healthy smile, looking for children’s dentistry, or getting back on track after time away from the dentist.

OUR PROCESS
What to expect when getting a check-up and clean
STEP 1
Oral Hygiene Exam
We’ll examine the health of your tongue, cheeks, the inside of your lips, and the roof and floor of your mouth, looking for abnormalities, growths, discolorations or swellings

We’ll examine the health of your tongue, cheeks, the inside of your lips, and the roof and floor of your mouth, looking for abnormalities, growths, discolourations or swellings. Teeth actually only make a small part of your overall oral health, stability, and general function, so as part of an oral health check, your dentist will be diligent when assessing for anything that you may have missed.

STEP 2
Charting Your Teeth
This is a close analysis of each of your individual teeth.

This is a close analysis of each of your individual teeth. The purpose of teeth charting is primarily to check for decay, but if you have existing tooth fillings or crowns and bridges, these will also be carefully checked during the charting stage to ensure they are sound and healthy and that the teeth around them show no signs of decay.

STEP 3
Periodontal (Gum) Probing
Gum health is a vital component of your overall oral health.

Gum health is a vital component of your overall oral health. Our dentists will check your gums for any signs of redness, swelling, or possible infection. A small dental instrument may be inserted between the gum and tooth to check for bleeding, while also measuring the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums. We will advise if you need gum disease treatment.

STEP 4
X-rays & Photography
We use the latest X-ray imaging technology to diagnose problems beneath or between your teeth that may not be visible during a visual exam.

We use the latest X-ray imaging technology to diagnose problems beneath or between your teeth that may not be visible during a visual exam. This can include a panoramic radiograph to check wisdom teeth or periodontal issues. In some circumstances, photos of your teeth may be taken in order to keep a record of wear and tear, cracks or discolouration over time.

STEP 5
Scaling
Scaling, or ‘deep’ cleaning, involves removing the tartar deposits, biofilm, and plaque from above and below the gum line.

Scaling, or ‘deep’ cleaning, involves removing the tartar deposits, biofilm, and plaque from above and below the gum line. This is done to ensure there are no toxin-releasing bacteria present, which can cause painful swelling and inflammation to the surrounding gum tissue and bone.

STEP 6
Prophy Polish
After plaque and hardened build-up have been removed, your dentist uses a soft rubber cup (or brush) and a special polishing paste to gently buff the surface of your teeth.

After plaque and hardened build-up have been removed, your dentist uses a soft rubber cup (or brush) and a special polishing paste to gently buff the surface of your teeth. This helps remove any leftover plaque and surface stains from things like coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking. It leaves your teeth feeling smoother, cleaner, and noticeably fresher.

STEP 7
Professional Fluoride Application
Sometimes, we will recommend a fluoride treatment to help re-harden your teeth and reduce the likelihood of future damage.

POST TREATMENT

Aftercare and maintenance for your check-up and clean

You’ve had your teeth cleaned, and now we want to keep them that way. After your check-up and cleaning, your dentist will provide specific instructions and professional advice about what you can do to maintain your fresh smile. Don’t forget, we offer emergency dentist services for urgent issues.

We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush to minimise damage to your gums, and one with bristles flexible enough to reach hard-to-reach places. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months to ensure a clean and bacteria-free brush. Brush twice a day, both morning and night, and floss daily.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions about a general check-up and clean

  • For most people, we recommend a check-up and clean every six months, in line with Australian Dental Association guidelines. Regular visits help us catch small issues early — before they turn into more complex problems. Some patients may need more frequent care, particularly if there is a history of gum disease, high decay risk, or ongoing dental treatment. We’ll always tailor the schedule to your needs.

  • Your appointment includes a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth, followed by a professional clean. We remove plaque and hardened build-up from above and below the gumline, polish your teeth to lift surface stains, and assess your gum health. If clinically required, we may recommend X-rays to check areas not visible to the eye. We’ll also talk through any findings clearly and outline next steps if treatment is needed.

  • For most patients, a standard clean is not painful — though you may feel mild sensitivity, particularly if there is inflammation or build-up around the gums. If your gums are already tender, some temporary discomfort can occur. We use a gentle approach and modern equipment to keep you comfortable, and we can adjust the appointment if needed. If you are feeling anxious, let us know. We’ll guide you through it.

  • A check-up and clean typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your oral health and whether imaging is required. If there is significant build-up or more detailed assessment needed, the appointment may take a little longer. We always allow enough time to be thorough — without rushing.

  • Not at every visit. X-rays are recommended when clinically necessary — for example, to detect decay between teeth, assess existing dental work, monitor wisdom teeth, or review bone levels around the gums. They allow us to identify problems that cannot be seen during a visual exam. If X-rays are advised, we’ll explain why and discuss any associated costs before proceeding.
