Bruxism / Teeth Grinding
What is bruxism?
Bruxism is a condition that involves involuntary teeth grinding or clenching. It commonly occurs during sleep, but some people also clench their teeth while awake — often during periods of stress or concentration.
Teeth grinding and teeth clenching are closely related, but slightly different. Clenching is the forceful holding together of the teeth without movement, and often happens during the day. Grinding involves the teeth rubbing against each other — often as grinding teeth in sleep — which many people don’t realise they’re doing until symptoms appear.
Over time, repeated grinding or clenching can lead to worn enamel, chipped or fractured teeth, jaw tension, headaches, tooth sensitivity, and strain on the jaw joints (TMJ). Early diagnosis often happens during your routine dental checkup and cleaning. Identifying bruxism allows us to protect your teeth from ongoing damage and help reduce pressure on the jaw before more complex treatment becomes necessary.
Key benefits of teeth grinding treatment
Addressing bruxism symptoms early helps reduce long-term strain on your smile.
- Protects teeth from wear, cracks, and fractures
- Reduces jaw tension and muscle fatigue
- Helps minimise headaches linked to grinding
- Supports long-term tooth and jaw health
Aftercare and maintenance for your teeth grinding treatment
After starting bruxism treatment, it’s important to wear your night guard consistently, especially if you’ve been diagnosed with night-time grinding. Clean it daily as instructed and bring it to your review appointments so we can check the fit and function.
If you already have worn enamel, cracks, or tooth fillings, protecting them from further pressure is essential. Ongoing grinding can place stress on restorations, so regular check-ups help ensure your teeth — and any existing dental work — remain stable and protected long term.
