Adapting to your new smile
If you get a filling, the first thing you’ll likely notice is numbness from the local anaesthetic. It’s easy to accidentally burn your mouth or cause injury by biting after filling procedures, while you can’t yet feel your lips or tongue. We recommend waiting until the sensation has fully returned (usually within two to four hours) before eating or drinking anything hot. Once the feeling returns, you might notice some ceramic or composite filling sensitivity, especially to cold drinks or firm pressure. This is a common reaction as the tooth’s nerve adjusts to the new material and typically fades within a few days. If you find that your bite feels “high” or uneven once the numbness is gone, don’t hesitate to reach out — a tiny tweak to the dental filling can make a world of difference in your comfort.
For patients navigating a new denture adjustment, patience is key! Your brain and muscles need time to learn to coordinate with the new prosthetic, which can initially make speaking feel slightly different or increase saliva production. It is normal to experience minor irritation as the gums adapt. If you are dealing with sore spots, it’s a good idea to keep a record of where they are and visit us for a professional adjustment. Wearing your dentures consistently helps us identify exactly where the pressure is so we can refine the fit for long-term comfort.
The importance of oral hygiene
Maintaining a thorough cleaning routine is essential. Even though a filling or denture itself cannot decay, the natural teeth and gums supporting them are still vulnerable. Brushing twice a day and flossing around your restorations prevents new issues from developing.
Frequently asked questions about filling and denture aftercare
-
Since the material is hardened instantly with a specialised light, you usually only have to wait 1-2 hours before eating with your white composite filling, or until your local anaesthetic has completely worn off — whichever comes first. This is just so that you don’t accidentally bite your cheek or tongue, or burn yourself on hot food.
-
Sore spots are a normal part of the new denture adjustment phase. Antifungal medications are often enough for minor soreness. Otherwise, you are welcome to book a follow-up appointment with our team. We will perform a minor adjustment to the base of the denture to relieve pressure on the soft tissues of your mouth.
-
Local anaesthesia usually lasts between two and four hours, though this varies depending on your metabolism and the type of anaesthetic used. Avoid hot coffee or tea during this time to prevent burning yourself while your heat-sensitivity nerves are still “asleep.”
-
If your bite feels uneven, it could simply be because the jaw was open for a long time during the procedure or in a slightly different position while numbed. Mild swelling and tenderness are also normal after treatment and may make your bite feel uneven until the swelling settles naturally. It could also mean that the restoration needs a fractional adjustment. Your dentist will help you find the root cause and provide adjustments if needed.
